What is God like?

What the Bible Says?

"The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth." – Exodus 34:6 NKJV

Three Things to Consider

  1. God described Himself, so we don't have to guess.

  2. He is holy, all-powerful, and all-knowing.

  3. He is merciful, patient, and faithful, and we see it most clearly in Jesus.

Short Answer

We don't have to guess, because God told us. When Moses asked to see God's glory, God proclaimed His own character: merciful, gracious, slow to anger, and overflowing with goodness and truth. Scripture also reveals Him as holy, eternal, all-powerful, and all-knowing. He is fatherly toward His children, patient, wise, and understanding. And if you want to see what God is like in person, look at Jesus. He welcomed sinners, healed the hurting, confronted hypocrisy, and gave His life for His enemies.
