Where Your Treasure Is, There Your Heart Will Be Also

What we treasure reveals what rules us, and Jesus calls us to place Him first above everything else.
What We Treasure Reveals What Rules Us
Last January, as we continued our series on the pre-eminence of Christ, we were reminded of a truth that reaches into every part of life: whatever we treasure most will shape our hearts most. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
That is not just a statement about money. It is a statement about worship. Your treasure is whatever you value most, trust most, protect most, and pursue most. And whatever holds that place in your life will begin to rule your thoughts, your priorities, your decisions, and your affections.
The Heart Always Follows What It Values
Many people think the heart leads and treasure follows. Jesus teaches the opposite. The heart follows treasure. What you invest in, sacrifice for, and build your life around will slowly take hold of your inner life.
That is why this issue matters so deeply. If our treasure is in comfort, success, possessions, reputation, or personal ambition, then our hearts will be tied to things that cannot save us and cannot satisfy us. But if our treasure is Christ, then our hearts will be drawn toward Him in love, trust, obedience, and worship.
This is one reason so many people feel spiritually divided. They say they love Jesus, but their real treasure is somewhere else. Their energy, attention, and devotion are being poured into things that compete with Christ for first place.
Christ Will Not Share First Place
At ShoutChurch, we believe Jesus Christ must be preeminent in all things. That includes not only what we say in church, but what we treasure in daily life. Christ does not ask for a corner of our lives. He demands the throne.
If our treasure is truly in Him, then our schedules, spending, conversations, relationships, and goals will begin to reflect that reality. We will not be perfect, but we will be increasingly surrendered. We will begin to care more about the kingdom of God than the applause of people. We will begin to seek eternal fruit more than temporary gain.
Jesus is not calling us to empty religion. He is calling us to wholehearted devotion. He is calling us to place our lives in His hands and to trust that He is better than anything this world can offer.
What Are You Protecting Most?
A good question to ask is this: What am I most afraid to lose? Often, the answer reveals our treasure. If the thought of losing something shakes us more than the thought of grieving God, then that thing may be competing for first place in our hearts.
This is not meant to condemn us, but to awaken us. The Lord reveals our misplaced treasures so He can lovingly call us back to Himself. He does not expose our hearts to shame us. He exposes them to free us.
When Christ becomes our treasure, we are no longer enslaved to lesser things. We can hold possessions loosely. We can endure hardship with hope. We can serve with joy. We can give generously. We can obey boldly. Why? Because our hearts are anchored in something eternal.
A Call to Treasure Christ Above All
This is the invitation before us today: treasure Christ above all. Treasure His Word above popular opinion. Treasure His will above personal preference. Treasure His kingdom above earthly success. Treasure His presence above comfort.
When Christ becomes our treasure, the heart begins to change. The mind begins to change. The life begins to change. That is what real discipleship looks like.
If you have been living with a divided heart, today is a good day to surrender again. Ask the Lord to search you, correct you, and draw your heart back to Him. He is worthy of first place.
Closing Prayer
Lord, search our hearts and reveal what we truly treasure. Forgive us for the ways we have allowed lesser things to compete with You for first place. Teach us to value Christ above comfort, success, possessions, and approval. Draw our hearts back to You. Let our lives reflect that Jesus is our greatest treasure. Help us to live with surrender, obedience, and joy as we follow You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
